Mahāvana Forest Monastery depends entirely on the tradition of dāna (generosity of giving), as practiced since the time of the Buddha. Monastics rely on the generosity of lay supporters for their basic needs, allowing them to turn inward for the deepening of meditation and contemplation. According to the monastic discipline (Vinaya), monks are not permitted to receive or use money, so financial support is managed by lay stewards and used for the needs of the monastery.
All gifts are received with gratitude and are used to sustain the monastery and the monastic community. Supporting the monastery through dāna is an opportunity to practice generosity, which brings happiness and supports the deepening of one’s spiritual practice.
